| This area is called Turtle Crawl Bay and wetlands. This area contains important mangrove habitat which supports various wildlife populations. The beginning of PEPA (Portland Environment Protection Association) started because some concerned citizens were driving past this area and saw the wetlands on fire. Apparently someone wanted to do some development and were burning the mangroves to clear the land. These people were concerned and called authorities to have the fire put out. They also wanted to replant the mangroves and so they formed the PEPA in the process and made one of their goals to do more environmental awareness so this kind of burning and destruction would not happen in the future.
